Divine Word University (DWU) is a National University. It offers a wide range of full-time and part-time programs within the faculties.

Three (3) Categories of Applicants.

DWU have three categories of applicants for enrollment at DWU. These are as follows:

 1: School Leaver.

This category includes students currently enrolled in Secondary and National High Schools, Private and International schools, who are doing Grade 12 and sit the Grade 12 National Examination.

2: Non-School Leaver (NSL)

The second category, Non School Leaver (NSL) includes those who have completed Grade 12 in the past and were not selected, Grade 12 upgrading their Grades or those who have completed Grade 10 and are now enrolled at a University Centre or employed.

3. Degree Applicants

The third category are Degree applicants, who completed two years of diploma studies either at DWU or elsewhere and who wish to upgrade their qualification to a degree level.

Application Process.

DWU will send NSL forms to those (NSL) who request for the Application form. On the FORM DWU require

  1. Personal Information
  2. Academic Information
  3. References from the Principal or other teachers from the School and from a Pastor or Community Leader
  4. Family or other details of a Sponsor. DWU will not send application forms to students in schools where students sit the Higher School Certificate Examination. They will use the official Department of Higher Education, Science, Research & Technology School Leaver form (SLF) to apply for admission to DWU.

A closing date for Applications at DWU is specified on the Form. After we receive all applications, they are then processed and forwarded to respective departments for the initial selection process (Pre-Selection). The Pre-Selected Applicants will go through the final selection after the Grade 12 selection at the Department of Higher Education, Science, Research & Technology in December.

Applications form and accompanied mandatory documents must be submitted by mail. Emailed and faxed copies will not be accepted.

Entry Requirements

There are five Faculties of studies at DWU. They are ARTS & SOCIAL SCIENCES, BUSINESS AND INFORMATICS, MEDICINE & HEALTH SCIENCES, EDUCATION and THEOLOGY.

Faculty Of Arts And Social Sciences

There are three course programs under the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences:

Bachelor of Communication Arts (Journalism):

Requires a minimum of “B” Grade in Language and Literature and “B”Grade average in all other subjects taken at Grade 12 level. Applicants with Social Science background are preferred.

Bachelor of Arts (Papua New Guinea Studies & International Relations):

Requires a minimum “B” grade in English and “B” grade average in final year 12 examinations or matriculation studies for Mathematics A or B and all social science subjects.

Bachelor of Arts (Social & Religious Studies and Social Work):

Requires successful completion of Grade 12 national examinations with an overall “B” average, in English (Language and Literature), Mathematics and Social Sciences subjects.

Faculty of Business And Informatics

There are four course programs under the Faculty of Business and Informatics:

Bachelor of Business (Accountancy)

Requires a minimum grade of “B” in English, a grade “C” in Mathematics A, as well as “B’s” in all other subjects are required at the Grade 12 level. Successful applicants enter as Business Studies students. At the end of Year Two students are streamed to Accountancy or Management depends on their performance during the first two years of study.

 Bachelor of Business (Management):

Requires a minimum grade of “B” in English, a grade “C” in Mathematics A, and “B” Grade or better in all other subjects taken at Grade 12 level. Successful applicants enter as Business Studies students. At the end of Year Two students are streamed to Accountancy or Management depends on their performance during the first two years of study.

Bachelor of Information Systems:

A minimum grade of “B” is required in Language & Literature, Mathematics A / Advanced Mathematics “C” average and “B” average in all other subjects taken at Grade 12 level. If you did not do Mathematics A do not apply. Students will find some background in Physics very helpful.

Bachelor of Tourism and Hospitality Management:

Requires “B” grade average in the final year 12 examinations. Good communication skills is necessary. Consideration may be given to those applicants with relevant work experience in the field of Tourism & Hospitality.

Bachelor of Mathematics and Computing Science:

Requires “B” Grade or better in Language and Literature, Advanced Mathematics and Physics and “B” Grade in other Grade 12 subjects taken.

Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences

There are eight course programs under the faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences:

Bachelor of Health Management:

Requires a “B” Grade average in all subjects taken at Grade 12 level. This is non clinical program. Students taking up Social Sciences are strongly encouraged to apply under this program.

Bachelor of Health Sciences (Rural Health):

Requires a minimum of “B’ Grade average in English, Advanced Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics at Grade 12 level or equivalent. If you have not taken Biology at Grade 12 do not apply. Applicants who upgraded their marks from recognized institutions must score a “B” average for required Science subjects taken and have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 and above.

Nurses and Community Health Workers below the age of 30 years who have upgraded their Grade 12 grades to “B” average are also given preference and encouraged to apply.

 Bachelor of Environmental Health:

Requires a minimum of “B” grade level in English, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics and Biology at Grade 12 level or equivalent. If you have not taken Biology at Grade 12 do not apply.

Bachelor of Physiotherapy:

Requires Grade 12 level and must have a minimum of “B” grades in Language and Literature, Mathematics and Science. Students who upgraded their marks from a recognized institution must score a “B” or better in these subjects.

 Applicants must have at least two (2) years’ work experience in rehabilitation and submit with their application a recommendation from their supervising physiotherapist.

Applicants must also submit a supervised English essay to explain why they would like to enroll in the Physiotherapy program.

Preferences will be given to Physiotherapy aides, nurses and Health Extension Officers with experience and exposure in rehabilitation services, however, applicants who do not have such experience or exposure will not be disadvantaged and are encouraged to apply.

Bachelor of Medicine & Bachelor of Surgery:

Requires minimum four “B” grades and one “C” grade in the following subjects:

  • Language and Literature
  • Advanced Mathematics
  •  Biology, Chemistry and/or Physics and taken at Grade 12 level.
  •  Must have successfully completed Science Foundation or Equivalent programs (including first degree in Science programs).

If you have not taken Biology at Grade 12 do not apply. The applicants who can provide having a valid contract to work after the graduation in a rural hospital will receive bonus points.

Postgraduate Diploma in Eye Care:

Requires a nursing qualification permitting registration in the Nursing Council of PNG as a nursing officer (NO) OR for rural health practitioners registered under the medical board of PNG as a health extension officers (HEO) with a Bachelors level qualification.

Candidates preferably must have a minimum of 2 years’ experience in health-related field and observation in the eye clinic or attached to the eye clinic for at least 2 months. Special entry may be considered on a case by case basis, for those who do not satisfy these requirements. THIS PROGRAM IS NOT OFFERED TO SCHOOL LEAVERS.

 Diploma in General Nursing

Requires “B” Grades or better in Language and Literature, “C” Grade or better in Advanced Mathematics and “B” Grade or better in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics and other Grade 12 subjects taken. Applicant must have done BIOLOGY at Grade 12.

This Program is offered at St. Mary’s School of Nursing (SMSON, Rabaul Campus) and St. Benedict’s School of Nursing (St. Ben’s SON, Wewak Campus)

Bachelor of Midwifery (St. Mary’s School of Nursing, – Rabaul Campus):

Entry requirement for this program is Diploma in General Nursing and Health Extension Officer, with minimum three years’ work experience in a clinical role. THIS PROGRAM IS NOT OFFERED TO SCHOOL LEAVERS.

Faculty of Education.

The Faculty of Education offers Bachelor of Education (Primary) Teaching pre service at two locations:

  •  St. Benedict’s Campus in Wewak, East Sepik Province and
  •  Our Lady of Sacred Heart (OLSH) Kabaleo – Kokopo, Rabaul Campus in East New Britain Province

The Bachelor of Education (Primary) Teaching program: requires a minimum of “B” Grades in Language and Literature and Mathematics at grade 12 equivalent and “B” Grade average in all other subjects. There is an EXIT Point after third year. All students will graduate with a Diploma in Teaching, and can continue with the Bachelor of Education Degree Program.

Faculty of Theology.

Faculty of Theology is located at Good Shepherd Seminary, Banz, Western Highlands Province.

For admission applicants make direct application to Good Shepherd Seminary. P. O. Box 53, Banz, W H P 283 PNG.

Entry Requirements

  1. A short text outlining the reasons why you want to study your preferred Course should be attached with your application form and the reasons why you should be offered a place in the Department.
  2. The completed form must be accompanied by CERTIFIED COPIES of all relevant documents: transcripts and certificates of qualification (s). A Commissioner of Oath, a Lawyer, a Magistrate or a Justice of Peace must certify documents as true copy of the original. Any documentation not properly certified will result in your application form not being processed.
  3. You must have completed Grade 12 with “B” Grade average or better in all subjects taken.
