The University of Goroka (UOG) has bought a property in the capital Port Moresby city to establish it’s campus according to a report in the National News paper. The property was worth K1.8 million kina. Currently UOG has a Southern campus offering courses through Open and Distance Learning (ODL) mode operating in the city on a rented premise. According to the report, the Vice Chancellor of UOG Professor Musave Sinebare, “the purchase was in line with the University’s vision “Gown to town” meaning making the university’s services and programs accessible to more people hence bringing the gown down to where people were. We have seen that in Port Moresby, there are more working class people who want to further their studies and enhance their learning while working and having a branch of the UOG will provide that accessibility for them”
A lot more work needs to be done before the campus is fully operational. Port Moresby is already a host of other Universities. Pacific Adventist University (PAU) and University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG) has their main campuses, while Divine Word University has a Port Moresby Campus right in the heart of town. Institute of Business Studies (IBS), and PNG Institute of Banking and Business Managment (PNGIBBM) also offers University level programs through partnerships with overseas universities.
UOG has niche market which is the teachers and education related programs. It has campuses or affiliated study centers in Mt.Hagen city in the western highlands, Popodentta in Northern Province and Solomon Islands, which is an island country which shares sea border with Papua New Guinea.
