A. POSTGRADUATE STUDY PROGRAMS AND ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

DOCTORAL PROGRAMS

1. Doctor of Philosophy ( by Research) – 8 semesters

The University of Goroka (UOG) offers a Doctor of Philosophy in most of the disciplines that are offered at postgraduate level. Prospective students that wish to in pursuing doctoral studies can contact the Director for Graduate Studies or the relevant Dean in a School. For Admission and Program Regulations governing the Doctor of Philosophy are advised to consult or obtain the University of Goroka Post Graduate Studies Handbook and consult the appropriate section of the publication. The degree of Doctor of Philosophy is offered in all Schools. A person interested in taking up doctoral studies may consult the relevant School Dean or Director, Post Graduate Studies.

Entry Requirements:

  • Degree of Master or a Bachelor with First Class Honors or equivalent from a Senate recognized institution shall be eligible to apply to register as a student of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy.
  • Applications should be made to the Chair of Post Graduate Studies Admissions and should include the details required by the prescribed form for Application for doctoral studies and a research proposal.
  • The Application, upon receipt, will be registered and forwarded to the relevant School Post Graduate Studies for a recommendation to the Senate or its delegate. A recommendation for registration to doctoral studies must include the proposed name(s) of one or more supervisors.
  • Applicants for the Doctor of Philosophy, upon admission will be registered provisionally for six months. Students, within the six months will be required to develop and prepare their thesis. At the end of that period Senate or its delegate – to confirm or cancel the student’s candidature – will review the prepared work.
  • A student’s candidature will commence, if the review is confirmed, from the commencement of admission.

3. Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) – 2 semesters

  • Obtained a degree of Bachelor at the University of Goroka with a GPA of at least 2.7 in 300 – and 400 – level courses in the appropriate major

17. Bachelor of Education – Educational Leadership and Management (Secondary/Primary – In-service ) – 4 semesters

     Entry Requirements

  • Diploma in Education or related teaching field (secondary, primary, vocational or technical education).
  • Experienced serving or recently serving principal of a school in the PNG school system
  • or similar.
  • Experienced senior teacher or aspiring teacher with proven potential to hold leadership roles in schools as recommended by the Regional Standards Officer or Provincial Education Advisor.

18. Bachelor of Education – Educational Psychology ( Secondary/Primary – In-service) – 4  semesters

  Entry Requirements

  • Diploma in Teaching Secondary/Primary.
  • Professional registration as a teacher.
  • More than two years of teaching experience.
  • Satisfactory Report from the Regional Standard Officer of applicant’s performance (Report must be within the last five years from the date of application).
  • Any other qualification and experience deemed appropriate by the Admissions Committee.

19. Bachelor of Education – Gender Studies and Social Development (Secondary/Primary In-service) – 4 semesters

  • Professional registration as a teacher.
  • More than two years of teaching experience.
  • Satisfactory Report from the Regional Standard Officer of applicant’s performance (Report must be within the last five years from the date of application).
  • Any other qualification and experience deemed appropriate by the Admissions Committee.

21. Diploma in Early Childhood Education – 4 semesters

       Entry Requirements

  • Grade 12 with a minimum GPA of 2.4 on the HSC from recognized institutions.
  • C grade or better in Language & Literature or B grade in Applied English
  • B grade in General Mathematics or C grade in Advance Mathematics.
  • Certificate in Early Childhood Education from recognized institutions and references (both character and professional) within the last five years from the date of application.
  • Official Police and Medical clearances must be attached.
  • Experiences in childcare activities including First Aid would be an advantage.
  • Any other qualifications or experiences as deemed necessary by the Admissions Committee.

22. Diploma in Guidance and Counseling – 4 semesters

      Entry Requirements

  • Grade 12 with a minimum GPA of 2.4 on the HSC from recognized institutions.
  • C grade or better in Language & Literature or B grade in Applied English.
  • B grade in General Mathematics, or C in Advance Mathematics.
  • Official Police and Medical clearances must be attached.
  • Experiences in counseling and related activities would be an advantage.
  • Qualifications in Guidance and Counseling related fields from recognized institutions and references (both character and professional) within the last five years from the date of application.

18. Diploma in Creative Arts Education (PVTE) – 8 semesters

     Entry Requirements

  • Diploma or Certificate in Creative Arts Agriculture with a minimum GPA of 2.4.
  • More than three years of work experiences in the area of Creative Arts.
  • Plus, satisfactory inspector’s or supervisor’s reports (Inspection report must be within the last five years from the date of application).
  • Any other qualification and experience deemed appropriate by the Admissions Committee.

8. Bachelor in Midwifery – In-service – 3 semesters

     Entry Requirements

  • Diploma in Nursing
  • Professional Registration as a Nurse with PNG Nursing Council.
  • More than three years of work experiences in the area of maternal health services of the government, church and NGOs.
  • Plus satisfactory inspector’s or supervisor’s reports (Inspection report must be within the last five years from the date of application).
  • Any other qualification and experience deemed appropriate by the Admissions Committee.

9. Diploma in PVTE Health – 2 semesters

  • Heath Education
  • Health Teaching

    Entry Requirements

  • Certificate or Diploma in Nursing in any health professional specialty from accredited institutions recognized by NDOH.
  • Professional Registration as a Nurse with PNG Nursing Council.
  • More than three years of work experiences in the area of Health Education or Health Teaching with health services of the government, church and NGOs.
  • Plus, satisfactory inspector’s or supervisor’s reports (Inspection report must be within the last five years from the date of application). For Health Teaching, the applicant should be recommended and supported by health training institutions.
  • Any other qualification and experience deemed appropriate by the Admissions Committee.

10. Diploma in PVTE Agriculture (In-service) – 2 semesters

Entry Requirements

  • Diploma Tropical Agriculture or PCD Agriculture with a minimum GPA of 2.4.
  • More than three years of work experiences in the area of Agriculture or Agriculture Extension.
  • Plus, satisfactory inspector’s or supervisor’s reports (Inspection report must be within the
  • last five years from the date of application).
  • Any other qualification and experience deemed appropriate by the Admissions Committee.

11. Diploma in Science (Primary – In-service) – 4 semesters

1. Bachelor of Applied Science (Home Economics) – 8 semesters

  • Textile and Fashion Design

  • Grade 12 with a minimum GPA of 2.8 on the HSC from recognized institutions.
  • C grade or better in Language and Literature or B grade in Applied English.
  • C in Advanced Math, or B in General Mathematics.
  • C grade or better in Science subjects in Year 12.
  • Any other qualifications and/or experiences as deemed acceptable by the Admissions Committee.

2. Bachelor of Design and Technology – 8 semesters

  • Building Construction
  • Welding, Machining & Metal Fabrication
  • Wood & Furniture Making

Entry Requirements

  • Grade 12 with a minimum GPA of 2.8 or equivalent from recognized institutions.
  • C or better in Language and Literature, or B in Applied English.
  • C in Advanced Math, or B in General Math.
  • C grade or better in Science subjects in Year 12.
  • Any other qualifications and/or experiences as deemed acceptable by the Admissions Committee.

3. Bachelor of Tourism and Hospitality Management – 8 semesters

Entry Requirements

  • Grade 12 with a minimum GPA of 2.8 or equivalent from recognized institutions.
  • C or better in Language and Literature, or B in Applied English.
  • C in Advanced Math, or B in General Math.
  • C grade or better in Science or Humanities subjects in Year 12.
  • Other qualifications and/or experiences as deemed acceptable by the University
  • Students with diploma (Tourism & Hospitality or Tourism/Hospitality) maybe admitted into the 2ndor 3rd year as deemed appropriate by the University, and also grades in Year 12 subjects as listed above.

4. Bachelor of Applied Science ( In-service- Secondary- Home Economics) – 4 semesters

6. Bachelor of TVET (Technical – Content – In-service ) – 4 semesters

     Entry Requirements

  • Diploma in Teaching TVET (Technical)
  • Current Motor Mechanic tradesman with technical qualifications.
  • With four years of apprenticeship training and tradesman certificate.
  • Possess trade testing certificates level 1-3 or NQF 1-4 with good practical experience.
  • Other qualifications and/or experiences as deemed acceptable by the Admissions Committee.

7. National Advanced Diploma in Automotive Engineering – Content- In-service – 6 semesters

    Entry Requirements

  • Current Motor Mechanic tradesman with technical qualifications.
  • With four years apprenticeship training and tradesmen certificate
  • Current technician with Grade 10 or basic education.
  • Possess trade testing certificate Level 1, 2, 3 or NQF 1, 2, 3 & 4 with good practical

8. Diploma in Hotel Operations Management – 4 semesters

       Entry Requirements

  • Grade 12 GPA with minimum of 2.4 or equivalent to grade 12 certificate with
  • C grade in Language and Literature, Science and Mathematics or better.
  • Or Grade 10 with National Certificate III & IV in Hospitality
  • Or Grade 10 with National Certificate III or IV in Hospitality with minimum 3 years of experience in Hotel industry and
  • Other qualifications as deemed accepted by the Admissions Committee.

9. Diploma in Tourism and Hospitality Management – 4 Semesters

     Entry Requirements

  • Grade 12 with a minimum GPA of 2.4 or equivalent from recognized institutions.
  • C grade or better in Language and Literature and Advanced/General Math.
  • C grade or better in Science or Humanities courses and
  • Other qualifications as deemed accepted by the Admissions Committee.

10. Diploma in Teaching TVET – In-service – 2 semesters

  • DTVET (Business Studies)
  • DTVET (Technical)

     Entry Requirements

  • Certificate in the respective specialization from recognized institutions and references (both character and professional) within the last five years from the date of application.
  • Experiences in the respective specialization would be an advantage.

11. Certificate III – 1 Semester

  • Physical Education
  • Sport and Recreation Management

    Entry Requirements:

  • Grade 12 with a minimum C Grade or better in all subjects
  • Must have done a sports education course in the last two years
  • Must be currently practicing as a coach, sports administrator or a technical official.
  • Those already on the field must provide evidence of Recognition of prior learning including sports course.

INSTITUTE OF DISTANCE AND FLEXIBLE LEARNING (IDFL)

1. Bachelor of Education in School Management (Secondary/Primary – In-service) – 4 to 8 semesters

       Entry Requirements

  • Diploma in Education or related teaching field (secondary, primary, or vocational & technical education).
  • Experienced serving or recently serving principal of a school in the PNG school system or similar.
  • Experienced senior teacher or aspiring teacher with proven potential to hold leadership roles in schools as recommended by the Regional Standards Officer or Provincial Education Advisor.
  • Special considerations will be given to female teachers and teachers from rural and remote schools.

2. Diploma in Early Childhood Education – 4 to 8 Semesters

      Entry Requirements

  • Grade 12 with a minimum GPA of 2.4 on the HSC from recognized institutions.
  • C grade or better in Language and Literature or B grade in Applied English
  • B grade in General Mathematics or C grade in Advance Mathematics.
  • Certificate in Early Childhood Education from recognized institutions and references (both character and professional) within the last five years from the date of application.
  • Official Police and Medical clearances must be attached.
  • Experiences in childcare activities including First Aid would be an advantage.
  • Any other qualifications or experiences as deemed necessary by the Admissions Committee.

3. Diploma in Business – 4 to 8 Semesters

  • Accounting
  • Management

     Entry Requirements

  • Grade 12 with a minimum GPA of 2.4 on the HSC from recognized institutions.
  • B grade or better in Language and Literature or A grade in Applied English.
  • B grade in General Mathematics or C grade in Advance Mathematics
  • C grade or better in Business Studies, or Accounting.
  • References (Professional) within the last five years from the date of application.
  • Any other experiences as deemed necessary by the Admissions Committee.

4. Diploma in Tourism and Hospitality Management – 4 to 8 Semesters
